How can we build circular economy in our villages ?

India is a rapidly urbanizing country with strong economic growth. However, according to the World Bank for 2021, 65% of the population resides in rural areas without access to essential services. Given this figure, it is crucial to undertake systemic improvements that can enable individuals living in these villages to meet their basic needs and earn a living.

Nowadays, many communities rely on urban regions for jobs and self-sufficiency. Eventually, people from these communities leave their parents, resources and local community behind to work in large cities. This rural-to-urban migration has been for year’s now creating labor issues in agriculture and hence is a big social issue in rural India

Although there is no harm in people migrating to cities for work, they should do so in search of "better" opportunities rather than because of "no" opportunities. As a result, there is still much to increase the sustainability and self-reliance of our villages.

Charity for Goodness is an organization where we try to make our villages more self-dependent so that the people don't move out for work and livelihood. Our organization already has several initiatives running, and we are looking to connect with social workers, NGOs, Community helpers, Government Institutions, and volunteers to support our ambition of making our villages more sustainable.

Here are some ways to support our skill development and employment mission and help these villages.

Social Entrepreneurship

Simply put, social entrepreneurship uses readily available resources to develop new or existing products to generate a sustainable income. Although it may seem like a significant phrase, those who live in little communities will find enormous value in it.

Our villages have a lot of handy resources, such as goats, cows, and even fish in some areas. We are already in the process of giving training through workshops and teaching our people how to use these animals for farming purposes which can yield them some income.

We have also taken sessions for our women, particularly on making candles, agarbattis, and stitching clothes. Not only will these classes build confidence, but it will also help them earn some money and not depend on anyone else.

Most villages have good soil fertility, and people are already engaged in farming practices; charity for goodness has also trained the rural youth in learning mushroom cultivation to make them self-dependent. Farm-based lively hood where multiple crops(including cash crops), building FPOs will be a great way to build higher income in rural India.

Community Education Activities

The most challenging situation faced in developing any community is accepting any change. This change could be as little as adapting to technology instead of doing everything manually. The societies frequently need help with this and remain underdeveloped because the locals stubbornly cling to antiquated beliefs. Mobilization of communities is a big one as we drive these initiatives and hence community education with gender inclusivity will be a key for success.

Quick Wrap Up

India has villages whose names do not appear on the map, making it difficult to reach out and drive development. But this should not stop them from trying to do something good. Join Charity for Goodness today, and let's work together to develop our underdeveloped part of the country.
